Caring for your oral health is an important part of maintaining good overall health and well-being. Dental disease is largely preventable - by practising a daily dental care routine (brushing and flossing), eating a balanced diet, avoiding smoking and visiting your dentist regularly for an examintion. Even if you have no noticable symptoms it is important to have regular exams to diagnose and treat disease early and avoid more complex and costly treatment.
A number of factors can influence your dental health, such as other health conditions (diabetes), medications, as well as pregnancy.
Many adults are keeping most, if not or all, of their natural teeth for a lifetime. All of your natural teeth and any dental work require ongoing care and attention to maintain good dental health. For older adults, arthritis and dementia can make caring for their teeth a challenge. It is important for family members and caregivers to support their care; dental decay can progress rapidly among aging adults.
